I was like a kid on Christmas morning when I opened up this box. Getting to grow little hydroponic pots of herbs on your kitchen counter - how cool is that? This kit comes with everything you need to set up and start growing basil, parsley, and dill. It took all of five minutes to set up, and while that is a wonderful aspect of this kit, the science geek in me was hoping for a bit more.There are a few rules to adhere to with this kit. Keep away from other sources of light, do not put near heat sources, keep an eye on the water level, but nothing so constrictive that it requires massive amounts of your time and attention. The light automatically turns on for 16 hours a day, and there are instructions included on how to set this so it best coincides with your schedule. Miracle-Gro advises that you will need to replace the bulb every six months, which runs about $16.00 for a pack of two. When the bulb does need to be replaced, make sure that you recycle it properly (Best Buy takes bulbs like this, for example). As the plants sprout and grow, the light arm needs to be adjusted higher to make sure the plants don't receive too much or to little light. Water will need to be added every few days to keep the level stable. The liquid food needs to be added every two weeks. Other than this, all you have to do is watch the pods sprout little green shoots in one to two weeks. The air pump does make a little noise, but it quickly faded into the background for us and we don't even notice it anymore.Another good feature of this aerogarden is that once you have grown these herbs, you can transplant them to a pot with soil and then reuse the little sprouting pods with regular seeds. The plan now is to get these three herbs to a nice healthy status, move them to pots, and start up again with three different herbs. Because this is the smallest of the available aerogardens from Miracle-Gro, you are limited to only three different types of plants at a time, and if they are for a plant that grows to a large/bushy size, you will find yourself transferring to soil pots on a regular cycle.Consider the start-up cost for this unit for approximately one year of use: a pack of replacement grow bulbs ($16), replacement filters ($13), liquid food ($28/qt), grow sponges to use your own seeds (50/$15), pod labels (recommended) ($16/50), your own seeds (cost will vary), replacement air stones for air pump ($14), this particular aerogarden ($65), electricity use (??) and wowza the cost quickly adds up in comparison to a 50# bag of Miracle-Gro potting soil ($10), basic quart size pots ($1/each), Miracle-Gro plant food ($8/one pound box), your own seeds (cost will vary), sunny spot in your home (Free). Granted the 'old fashioned' way of seeds in pots of soil isn't neat-o futuristic as the aerogarden, and for non-green thumbs like me a bit more likely to end up with a few pots that don't grow anything, it is a much cheaper way to get an indoor kitchen garden. The upkeep cost is the reason I deducted a star from this product. I do really, really like the whole science-y aspect of the aerogarden, but for a casual gardener, it really isn't worth the long term cost.If you home school your child(ren), this would make a great addition to your 'classroom' as it provides several teachable aspects: hydroponics, life cycle of plants and seeds, what is necessary to grow food and why areas of the world cannot grow anything or only particular crops, how to harvest seeds from plants and save them in order to grow new crops, etc. Though growing some plants the old fashioned way would be less expensive, this method is much more attention grabbing and interesting in the long term. My nephew (whom I have been updating in pictures) constantly asks for the status of the plants and can't wait until he is here on his next school break so he can see/experience this aerogarden in person. Plans have already been made for what he wants to try and grow with it during next summer break. I could also see this being a thoughtful gift for an older person that loves to garden but may not be able to due to arthritis in their hands. The unit could be set up for them so they wouldn't have to do to anything other than add the water and food and adjust the light height as needed. Also if someone lived somewhere that didn't have enough sunlight hours part of the year (like Alaska) it would be a great option to grow a small kitchen garden.Would I purchase this for others? Yes, though only for people that I KNOW would keep up with the unit and continue to use it to grow items, such as those who love to cook with fresh herbs or love to garden. It makes for an interesting gift and conversation starter, and can provide a very useful product (produce) instead of another gift that just sits there collecting dust or gets shoved into a closet. However, I would also purchase additional grow bulbs, liquid food, filters, air stones, grow sponges, pod labels, etc. so it is a complete gift that will keep on giving for a good amount of time before the recipient needs to spend their own money to replenish stock. It is pricier, but based on how much I am looking forward to using this to start more herb plants once those included are big enough to transplant, receiving this would be an amazing thing for the right person.

This is a very strange "new product" and I've trying to figure out what it is. Check out the less expensive Aerogarden 3SL which as far as I can tell is identical to this one, but around $20 dollars less. (You can find it for $49.99 dollar regularly).I own 2 Aergardens Ultra (the LED variety, which light lasts 3-5 years before needing replacement and grow 7 plants each).When it was first offered to me, I checked and it read that this was an LED. So I thought the Aerogarden Sprout, was just an LED version of the Aerogarden 3SL, sadly to say, it is not. This is a CFL bulb with mercury, that you need to dispose ever 6 months, and buy another one for around $15. Amazon appears to have fixed their product description and LED is now not mentioned anywhere.But again, this product looks identical on every way to the 3SL, which is cheaper. So it begs the question as what exactly is this?The box or instruction manual it came with does not even list the Aerogarden Sprout anywhere. There is no branding anywhere that tells you which Aerogarden this is. So my suspicion is that they had an overstock of the 3SL and are trying to rebrand them as Aergarden Sprout, which sounds like a better name that came from the marketing department to try to fix slow sales of the 3SL.Ok, that rant out of the way, lets start with the pros and cons:Pros:- Occupies very little space. Can fit between the kitchen counter and cabinets, even when fully extended.- Very easy cleanup. (Cleaning up the Aerogarden ultra after a big season is like a half an our job. This one is like 2 minutes.)- Grows herbs fine.- Simple operation, just 2 buttons to set the light and the nutrients, thats it.Cons:- Replace propietary CFL bulbs every 6 months. These contain mercury and need to be disposed properly. It's not that simple and it's time consuming depending on where you live to do this properly.- It doesn't extend very much, so not only do you only grow 3 items, but they won't grow very big. Basil can take up the full extension of the Aerogarden ultra which reaches about twice as much as this one and product a ton of basil. This one will produce much less, even if I plant only 3 basil plants on the ultra and 3 on this Sprout, the Ultra would produce about 3 times as much basil.Overall, I am not a big fan of corporations claiming they are releasing a new product, even though they are just rebranding a poor seller. If this product was an LED, I'd feel better and give it a better rating, but as it stands, it's wasteful and to top it off, it's more expensive than the 3SL which is its twin.So, if you have very little space and need a small aerogarden, and you live in a town which makes it easy to dispose lightbulbs with mercury, this might be a good fit, otherwise, I'd get any of their LED products.I've changed the review from 2 stars to 1 star based on the following additional issues:- it's loud. I thought I'd get used to it, but it sounds like if you're must've boiling water in the kitchen and it's on an unstable pot that vibrates. By comparison, the much larger Ultra sounds like more like a pleasant water fountain and it is not nearly as loud or have all the vibrations this one does. Main problem is just that it's all plastic, there is no rubber to reduce vibration, and pump is at the edge, while the ultra pump is deep in the center under a lot of water so it's significantly quieter.- the other disappointing issue is that there is half a finger of space between plants (after the domes/seeds are in) basically not much space at all. I'd be shocked if this produces more than 1/5 (20%) of what the ultra produces. The ultra has 6 times as much space in between. (I can fit 3 full fingers in any direction, while not even 1 fits in the sprout)- Another issue for all CFL lights, is that they burn what they touch. So if you don't watch your plants closely, the taller ones will get burnt. LED versions do not get hot, and you can forget for a few days, then trim and you get perfectly fine produce, even the one directly touching the LED for over 24 hours.Updated back to 2 stars, because their customer service is excellent and that adds value to any product. I actually talked to an account manager, and I wanted to point out what they said:- This product is identical to the 3SL but with an improved pump. apparently the 3sl had bad reviews mainly due to the pump which made for little growth and high failures. They changed manufacturer of the pumps and now all the issues of the 3SL should be improved.- contrary to some people who still insist (view comments section) this product is NOT an LED. Manager confirmed this as well.- 3sl is getting phased out due to the pump issue, so soon you'll no longer be able to buy it. The sprout is the replacement product fixing old issues.UPDATE on growth:* With my other Aerogardens, each pod usually produces around 3-4 starts, which typically end up as 2-3 strong growing plants (when doing basil, which is what I started here.* It's only one sample, but I got just 1 start on 2 of the pods, and 2 starts on the other. So 4 total plants growing out of 3 pods. This is virtually the equivalent of just 1 of the pods on the Ultra LED.Aerogarden introduced 9 new Gardens, all very decent products in their fall 2015 revamp. This Sprout is the only one they retained with CFL bulbs. All the rest are LEDs and much better. Spend the extra money on the Sprout Plus (this one but with LED bulbs) you'll get better growth and save money in the long term. (yes, better product that in 1.5 years is already cheaper than this one, based on power consumption and cost of replacement bulbs). Plus you don't need to deal with mercury every 6 months trying to find a facility that can properly dispose of these.Honestly, they just wanted as cheap as possible entry level product, and a way to keep selling their huge stockpile of CFL bulbs. The LED gardens are the way to go. No toxic elements, and no replacing every 6 months. Disappointed.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I started them Memorial Day weekend. The basil and dill are over 8" tall. I pruned them today so I did not need to raise the light. The parsley is taking longer, but starting to grow.I purchased a kit for each of my daughter-in- laws and another one for me because I purchased the salad pods and tomato pods. I will be giving a salad and tomato pod to each of my daughter-in-laws.I only planted the salad on Monday and they are already starting to sprout.Next I want to try the tea pods and flowers. Of course, this mean buying additional gardens. I would recommend this product to anyone.Some people have written that some pods did not produce. This is true with any seed. Not all of them develop.The review that said once the plants start growing you will need to add water daily is correct.The whole process is amazing and I will be able to have fresh herbs, tomatoes and salads year round as I live in PA where we have cold winters.When I purchase the flowers I am going to put one in my living room and another in my bedroom.Amazing product.
